THE USUAL SUSPECTS

Dr. Gio Washington-Wright's
Los Angeles Studio Musicians Tribute Site

Why?

These people are the incredible musicians who bring us the beautiful music we hear on favorite movies, TV shows, and recordings. They toil away in anonymity. This site, and group, are dedicated to them. May they finally get the recognition they deserve...

Sly Stallone coaching Rick Baptist, Wayne Bergeron, Malcolm McNab, Charley Davis, Gary Grant, Warren Luening, Dennis Farias, & Larry Hall. One of the funniest (and most needless) things I've ever seen.

LA Studio Musicians

April 20, 2009

I came across a fabulous website during a random surfing session last week. LA Studio Musicians (The Usual Suspects) is an absolute goldmine of information about the amazing west coast musicians who create the music for movies, TV and popular music recording sessions, both past and present. Each of the masters of their craft has a tribute page, some more than one. Jerry Hey, the doyen of session trumpet players, has six!

There are stories and pictures galore, but, more importantly, a myriad of MP3s, videos and even PDFs of scores and parts. If you are interested in soundtracks, movie music in general, the instrumental/vocal backing for just about every great R&B/fusion/jazz artist of the past 50 years, a serious scholar or music student, this site is a must-see.

All the tribute pages within the site are almost reverential, as they should be. If you only have time for one or two today, check out a couple of trumpeters, Malcolm McNab and the aforementioned Jerry Hey (I should direct you straight to the flute page!). Between them, they have created the standard by which all others are judged. Click on McNabb’s recording of his trumpet arrangement of the slow movement of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto or Hey’s horn arrangements (with PDF score) of songs by Al Jarreau and Earth, Wind and Fire. Jaw dropping! Enjoy!
