PETE CHRISTLIEB

RECOMMENDED LISTENING: "Apogee" (with Warne Marsh)

Pete trading with saxophonist Joel Peskin on a Pat Boone CD

Pete Christlieb is probably one the world's most famous anonymous tenor saxophonists. For years, he played jazz tenor in Doc Severinsen's Tonight Show big band. His big, beefy sound and aggressive solos were heard mostly in brief snippets as the show came out of commercials, unfortunately denying the American public a chance to hear a very fine saxophonist improvise at length. Though he's done good work elsewhere, Christlieb's biggest claim to fame away from Severinsen and Carson is a Warner Brothers album he recorded in 1978 with fellow tenorist Warne Marsh. Apogee is one of the most compelling straight-ahead jazz albums of the '70s. Christlieb's cocky, rhythmically assured style contrasts effectively with Marsh's looser, more querulous manner. The record's overall air of curious abandon foretold (somewhat wrongly, as it turned out) a bright future for mainstream acoustic jazz in the coming decade.

Christlieb was born into a musical family. He began playing the violin at seven, and tenor sax at 13. After playing with a variety of L.A.-based bands in the early '60s, including those led by Chet Baker, Woody Herman, and Sy Zentner, Christlieb joined drummer Louis Bellson's band in 1967, with which he would continue to play into the '80s. His first record as leader was the deleted Jazz City, an LP released in 1971. The tenorist started his own label, Bosco Records, in 1981; Bosco would issue small-group albums by Christlieb, as well records by Bellson and Bob Florence. Christlieb has long been in demand as a studio player; he's played innumerable sessions of every type. Other prominent jazz figures with whom he's played include Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Quincy Jones, and Sarah Vaughan.

RECOMMENDED LISTENING: "Global Mission"

Venezuelan-born Pedro Eustache is an openly creative solo flautist/composer—doubling in reeds, World-Music woodwinds, and wind synthesizers—with a unique, richly eclectic, and multidirectional personal voice. This musical language is the direct result of years of both solid studies and professional experience in the classical-European, African-American (jazz), world music, popular-folk, and computer/electronic music art forms.

Mr. Eustache holds diplomas in classical flute from the ‘Hector Berloiz’ Conservatory and in avant garde flute from the ‘Asnieres School of Music’ (Paris, France); a masters degree (M.F.A.) in jazz flute (reeds) from the California Institute of the Arts (L.A., U.S.A.); and special studies and master classes in world music flutes and woodwinds from a plethora of first-class, internationally renown masters, including Pandits Ravi Shankar and Hariprasad Chaurasia. Pedro was first (solo) flute for three major Latin-American Symphony Orchestras and played numerous solo recitals, jazz concerts, and studio sessions. Since moving to the United States, he has played, recorded, and/or toured with a plurality of remarkable jazz, classical, world music, and computer/electronic musicians, such as James Newton, Alex Acuna, Andre Crouch, Don Caymmi, Henry Threadhill, Morton Subotnik, and Daisaku Kume.

Mr. Eustache is a featured soloist with new age superstar Yanni and is also a Cal-Arts adjunct faculty member. As a solo-artist for the MIDI/MMP record labels, Pedro also has two best-selling CDs. He is currently completing a textbook on the holistic approach to flute instruction.

Brandon playing flute on The Rippingtons' tune "Los Cabos" from "Kilimanjaro"

http://www.lastudiomusicians.net/lc.mp3

To call Brandon Fields a talented saxophonist is to understate the true musical genius of this diverse musician. Brandon, who learned the saxophone at the age of 10 while growing up in Orange County, CA, began working as a freelance musician while still a teenager, and has been busy ever since. Brandon's first solo album came out under the Nova label in 1986 to critical acclaim. There have been seven other solo albums since, including his latest, "Fields and Strings," released in late 1999 under the Paras Recording Company, which has been met with rave reviews.

Brandon Fields is no stranger to recording. His first time in the studio was in 1976, and since then he has appeared on hundreds of albums. His record credits read like a "who's who" of the musicbusiness, including Nancy Wilson, Phil Upchurch, George Duke, Stanley Clark, Ricky Peterson, Tower of Power, Terence Trent D'Arby, Elton John, Neil Diamond, Luther Vandross, Tom Petty, Quincy Jones, Los Lobotomys, Neil Larsen, Luis Conte, Alphonse Mouzon, Bill Meyers, Al Jarreau, Robben Ford, the Rippingtons, Alex Acuna, David Benoit, Michael McDonald, David Garfield, Lionel Richie, Harry Connick Jr., and Dave Weckl. When he's not in the recording studio, Brandon Fields stays busy doing live shows and touring around the world. Brandon is a very energetic and entertaining Jazz saxophonist combining his wide range of influences and experiences into his own unique contemporary mainstream style. He has also toured with several successful acts including George Benson (1985-86), The Rippingtons (1987-89), Tower of Power (early 1990's), Earth Wind and Fire(1995), and with the Dave Weckl Band (1998-present).

GREG HUCKINS

KIM HUTCHCROFT

Kim comes from the tiny farm community of Middletown, Iowa (population 150), but he's had an exemplary musical education, first at the University of Iowa and then, because he was more interested in performance than teaching, at the University of Indiana. That's where he met Jerry Hey and Larry Williams and the three soon found themselves playing shows in beautiful Hawaii and destined to become the Seawind Horns. From baritone, tenor, alto and soprano saxes to all flutes and wooden recorders.

GREG SMITH

RECOMMENDED LISTENING: "No Baggage" (with wife and fellow woodwind expert, Bev Dahlke-Smith - Intima Records) and "Smile and Nod" (with trombonist Nick Lane - Strokeland Records).

Greg soloing on "Blues For Buddy" from "No Baggage"

http://www.lastudiomusicians.net/GregBlues.mp3

Greg Smith began playing the saxophone at the age of eight. He attended
college at North Texas University where he studied with Tim Bell and Jim
Riggs. His playing is strongly influenced by musicians such as Coltrane, Miles
Davis, Gerry Mulligan, Serge Chaloff, Buddy Rich and numerous others.

Greg Smith just completed an album entitled "Smile & Nod". He told Teen
Jazz that he is making more money than he ever has at any other point in
his career while touring with The Eagles and feels that his career has gone
exactly how it was supposed to go. He does wish, however, to write more
and improve his image marketing skills. He also looks forward to teaching
master classes at schools, record more, and to continue touring.

Some of the artists and groups that Greg Smith has performed with include
Aaron Neville, Pink, Stan Kenton, Bruce Willis, The Eagles, Supersax, Buddy
Rich, and Dwight Yocum. He feels that his coolest gig is his current one with
the Eagles while his lamest one he had was with Johnny Catron that paid
only $23 a week after taxes. Greg Smith's most embarassing gig was when
he was on the road for the first time. He was playing with Stan Kenton;
Albert Hall had written a feature for him. When he went to play the solo, he
squeaked in front of thousands of people.

Greg Smith's first horn was a Beuscher Soprano Saxophone that he inherited
from an uncle. Hobbies that he enjoys aside from music include golf and
"annoying people". Greg Smith has endorsements with SaxRax and has had
an endorsement with Rico since 1983.
